The first action humans took before God after eating the forbidden fruit was to hide. Sin drives us away from our relationship with God, and life’s hardships and trials pull us deeper into darkness.

In the midst of brokenness from which we cannot rise by ourselves, we eventually come to confess that we are fundamentally beings without hope.

Scripture calls this state of thorough self-awareness a ‘broken spirit.’ And the Lord says He delights in precisely this broken spirit. A broken spirit is the true worship the Lord seeks, and it becomes the pathway through which we can meet Him most deeply.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) We praise the name of His love and power that eternally establishes us as His children, even when we were broken by sin and suffering.
